It takes an immense creative prowess to even slightly stir up the strata of today’s pop culture. We have thousands of Tumblr demigods, strikingly talented and instantly recognizable fine art photographers, boundary garbling fashionistas, and reverb-laden basement jangle inventions. We have everything, and yet there’s no pivotal center, just a really cool-looking and awesome-sounding periphery. Whether that’s a negative trait is still up for a debate. In the meantime, we’ve picked a couple of shakers and makers, guys and gals in this periphery of culture and art that, among hundreds of others, constantly jolt our perspective on how life can look, sound and resonate. And we also gave them our own unique alter egos! Lean in!
A voice with a truly noteworthy power in the trans and underground communities is that of Hari Nef’s despite herself being somewhat awesomely down-to-earth and rightfully reserved towards all the sensation-seekers out there. Voted to be Dazed readers’ number one of 100 creatives shaping the youth culture for 2015, as well as ranking at the high end in the following year, Hari is a true counter-culture iconoclast who’s striking looks and delivery are something to behold.
Just a pure excitement of being and doing it the cool way despite the occasional dung on the road. It’s been long since an honest, street-level edginess had such an amazing yet intriguingly contradictory crossover with the mainstream flow.
Okay, 2016 is a pretty colorful place fashion wise. The pseudo 90’s aesthetics, coupled with extreme, sometimes hit-and-miss forms of self-expression and a general zeitgeist against the increasingly right-wing establishment (Cracks in the Europe, the Trump Buffon in the States) has created a mishmash of sophistication and trashiness. Matty Bovan is at the center of it all.
A man who works for Louis Vuitton, yet cites the following as his biggest influences – “music, TV, garage and crap shops”. There’s no banter here, these actually are the places where the creative pulse hits harder than ever. Uncompromising and unashamed, Matty Bovan views the craft of designer’s to be an opportunity to exercise one’s energy in a super exciting way. And the energy is the quality that’s clearly apparent in Matty’s creations.
The track record of Claire Boucher is a one to be flabbergasted by. An electro-pop icon, a fairy-like modern diva that melts the screamer vocal technique with the K-pop quirk, an artist that has affected and keeps on affecting the youth culture on a frankly seismic level.
From the moody intro synth line of the 2012’s Oblivion to the dynamic beats of Art’s Angels (2015), Grimes is exciting to look at and electrifying to listen to. And it’s not a sort of middle-of-the-road curiosity, she truly does excel in both disciplines. The additional layer of mystique is also there, making for a one truly compelling act. With that all said, it now appears that Canada is on a serious mission to revitalize the global music scene as a whole. Just check out the long line of amazing artists that have been lately coming from the place!
A true example of an overnight fashion sensation, Sol Goss walked the walk for Louis Vuitton as the first runaway of his career. Needless to say – not too many people do that. Some say that the man is living a true fashion fairy tale, yet just by a quick sneak peek it’s clear that Goss is built for the job.
Boasting cheekbones and lips to die for, the 19-year old enjoys playing football during the spare time and looking like an ethereal fashion prince while on the active duty. Just look at the photo by Robie Rodriguez. Sol Goss is the perfect option for the late 80’s fashion smashion vibe going on. With a posture like Goss’s, everything suits and shines. An awe-inspiring mix of the conventional and the non-conformist beauty.
The evolution of the 20-year-old fashion power player Binx Walton can be seen as being somewhat in a correlation with the general shift of culture, a culture that’s now obviously on a huge quantum jump towards the next generational podium. There’s no spot for the mundane, only for those whose energy can contribute. It’s all about the new American dreamers, new kids, new perspectives and a complete lack of fear.
Binx gets straight to the point, encouraging “real girls with real personalities to come forward”. Despite acknowledging the unpredictability of the industry, she still carries on a positive cavalier demeanor, a common trait for the new wave of pop culture up-and-coming’s. Plus, she also led the Lagerfeld’s feminist protest of Chanel SS15. Looks and thought can become an effective instrument of change when in the right hands.
Art Baby Gallery
Art Baby Gallery is a girls-only online exhibition platform, constantly providing the realm of online art with series of colorful, pop-art infused prints. But beautifully executed contemporary chic is not all there is. Art Baby Gallery, in as much as it is about creativity as the only criteria that really matters, is about being yourself and embracing everything that the true feminity represents.
Highlighting the significance of Tumblr as a legitimate art distribution platform, Art Baby Gallery spreads the word with an ever-increasing resonance. As the founder and curator, Grace Miceli (in the picture) puts it – “I’m excited to take over the world”. At this point, it seems that besides excitement there’s also an obvious success. As for the alter ego? Art Baby Gallery consists of different individualities that collectively create a wonderfully vivid collage. That’s why.
This is just a handful of personalities in today’s spectrum that matter presumably more than we can comprehend at the moment. Thanks to the bravery and creativity of this young crowd and countless of their contemporaries, the right chord seems to finally be stricken. Regardless of where it goes from here, the spectacle will surely be magnificent.
